Subsidy

Every figure tied to the government clause it came from

The pages that rank for mushroom subsidy print a percentage and stop there. We hand you the document the percentage came from — because in front of a district horticulture officer, that is the part that works.

Which is why there is no national rate on this page. A single figure for “the mushroom subsidy in India” does not exist — the norm, the ceiling and the category bonus all move by scheme and by state.

Buy During Harvest, Store for Better Profitability

Crop residues are usually cheapest immediately after harvest because supply is high and farmers want fast field clearance. A compost unit can reduce raw-material cost by buying wheat straw, paddy straw, maize stalk, sugarcane residue, cotton stalk and barley straw during harvest, then storing them safely for off-season use.

Storage & Quality Warnings

  • Wet straw is not savings, it is future loss.
  • Do not store wet sugarcane bagasse in closed stacks.
  • Avoid black, mouldy, foul-smelling, soil-contaminated straw.
  • Keep stacks elevated from the ground.
  • Keep separate stacks for each substrate.
  • Label source, date, weight, and moisture condition.
  • Protect from rain, rodents, termites, and fire.
  • Do not judge profitability by purchase price alone — add transport, labour, baling, chopping, storage loss, and moisture loss.

Edible Mushroom Farming Ecosystem

From Raw Material → Compost → Production Room → Harvest → Market. A complete, production-ready guide for first-time farmers.

Mushroom Farming Is NOT "Just Growing"

It is a controlled biological factory. Three pillars decide success:

  1. Correct Compost / Substrate

    The foundation of your crop

  2. Correct Environment

    Temperature, Humidity, CO₂ control

  3. Correct Process Timing

    Each stage has specific duration

Miss one → crop failure.

Main Focus

High Investment | High Returns | Most demanded mushroom in India

  • Most demanded mushroom in India
  • Used in hotels, pizza chains, processors
  • Stable B2B pricing
  • Requires technology, not guesswork

Truth: compost sets the yield. Two identical rooms can give very different crops on compost alone.

Purpose:

Create selective food for mushroom, kill competitors.

Raw Materials:
  • Wheat straw (chopped 6–8 cm)
  • Chicken manure
  • Urea / DAP
  • Gypsum
  • Water
Process:
  1. Pre-wet straw thoroughly (72–75% moisture)
  2. Stack formation
  3. Turning on Day 3, 5 and 7
  4. Core temperature 70–78°C between turns
  5. Ammonia smell appears (normal)

Output: Partially fermented compost

Common Mistakes:
  • Poor turning
  • Wrong moisture
  • Cheap manure

Purpose:
  • Kill insects, pathogens
  • Remove ammonia
  • Make compost selective
Process:
  1. Fill compost in tunnel
  2. Pasteurise at 58–60°C for 6–8 hours
  3. Condition at 45–50°C for 4–6 days
  4. Ammonia below 10 ppm

Output: Ready-to-spawn compost

Temperature
24–25°C
Spawn Rate
0.5–0.75%
Method
Bags/Trays
Incubation
12–16 days

Spawn mixed uniformly. White mycelium covers compost after incubation period.

Purpose:

Triggers fruiting. Not for nutrition.

Casing Mix:
  • Peat / Cocopeat
  • Chalk
  • pH 7.5–7.8

Applied after full spawn run.

Mandatory Systems:
  • PUF insulated room
  • MS racks
  • AHU / Ducting
  • CO₂ & Fresh air control
  • Humidity 85–90% (cropping)
  • Temp 16–18°C (cropping)
Myth Busted:

"AC laga do, mushroom ho jaayega" → Wrong. Button mushroom is gas-sensitive, not just temperature-sensitive.

CO₂ Level
Reduced
Fresh Air
Increased
Pins Appear
5–7 days after airing
Harvest
18–21 days after casing
  • 3 flushes per crop (about 50/30/20%)
  • Yield: 18–22 kg per m² of bed

Common Myths Exposed

These misconceptions destroy crops and trust. Know the truth.

  • "Mushroom farming without AC"

Button mushrooms crop at 16-18°C after a spawn run at 22-24°C, so the room must change climate by stage. AC alone won't work - you need AHU with humidity and CO₂ control.

  • "Button mushroom in normal room"

Button mushrooms are gas-sensitive. Without proper ventilation, CO₂ builds up and kills the crop.

  • "Compost is optional"

Compost is the single largest factor in yield: two identical rooms can give very different crops on compost alone. Quality compost is the foundation.

  • "Spawn is everything"

Good spawn with bad compost = crop failure. The ecosystem must work together.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about mushroom farming investment, returns, and requirements

Mushroom farming in India is the controlled cultivation of edible fungi — mainly button (Agaricus bisporus), oyster and milky mushrooms — on pasteurised compost or straw substrate inside climate-controlled rooms. A commercial crop runs about 60 days in the room: filling and spawning, a spawn run of about 14 days (12-16), casing, pinning, then 3 flushes of harvest. Button mushrooms crop at 16-18°C and 85-90% humidity, with the spawn run warmer at 22-24°C, which is why insulated PUF grow rooms with refrigeration are used across India instead of seasonal sheds.

Start by choosing the mushroom type (button for volume and price, oyster for low capex), then take 3-5 days of hands-on training, secure land with three-phase power and water (about 0.4 acre for two rooms and a compost unit on our layout), and decide whether to buy Phase-III compost or build your own compost unit. Next comes a DPR for bank finance or subsidy, the grow-room build with racks and climate machinery, and a trial cycle under supervision. Most successful growers in India come from non-farming backgrounds.

Button mushroom is the most profitable at commercial scale and makes up most of India's production. Our cost model plans on ₹120/kg farm gate, and a well-run climate-controlled room gives 18-22 kg per m² of bed over three flushes — about 2 kg a bag. Oyster mushroom costs far less to start but sells for less, while milky mushroom suits hot regions. Medicinal mushrooms such as reishi and cordyceps carry the highest margins but need a buyer lined up before you build.

Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Odisha and Telangana lead Indian mushroom production. With climate-controlled PUF grow rooms, mushroom farming is viable in every state year-round — location mainly changes power cost, compost raw-material cost and market distance, not feasibility.

On MushroomFarming.in (mushroomfarming.in), the free learning platform MushroomWale runs jointly with the ICAR-Directorate of Mushroom Research, Solan. Its Mushroom University has 6 schools, 13 courses and 86 lessons — each with objectives, sourced numbers, a diagram or photo, a task for your own farm and self-check questions — plus a crop-problem check and a temperature tool, in English and Hindi. It is education, not a certificate: DMR is the joint educational partner and does not approve individual guides or commercial projects.

On MushroomBazaar (mushroombazaar.com), the free marketplace MushroomWale runs jointly with the ICAR-Directorate of Mushroom Research, Solan. Growers post stock, buying requirements and harvest forecasts, and search a researched directory of 94 mushroom buyers across 19 states — retail chains, processors, mandis, hotels and brands, each entry showing the public source it came from. There is no commission, no listing fee and no paid ranking: buyer and grower agree the price between themselves. Local mandis, wholesalers, hotels and processors remain the other routes to market.
