The short answer

How to Prepare Mushroom Compost?

Mushroom compost preparation has two phases: Phase-I (Day 0–9, on the slab and in aerated bunkers) uses wheat straw (1,000 kg) + chicken manure (600-700 kg) + urea + gypsum with a core of 70-78°C. Phase-II (Day 9–15, in a sealed tunnel) heats to 58-60°C for 6-8 hours, then conditions at 45-50°C for 4-6 days; the whole cycle is 15–16 days from pre-wetting to spawning. Good compost is dark brown, earthy-smelling, pH 7.0-7.5, moisture 66-70%. Self-made compost costs ₹8,400-9,700 a ton on the site's cost model, against ₹12,300-14,300 bought in.

Phase-I Compost Formula

Standard recipe for 1 ton of wet compost. Source: ICAR-DMR Solan.

IngredientQuantityPurpose
Wheat Straw1,000 kgCarbon source (base substrate)
Chicken Manure600-700 kgNitrogen source (N:C ratio balancing)
Urea10-12 kgAdditional nitrogen supplementation
Gypsum30-40 kgpH buffering, structure improvement
Water3,000-3,500 LMoisture (68-72% final)

Phase-I Schedule (Day 0–9)

Day 0

Wet the straw on the slab to about 70% moisture; mix in manure and bran

Ambient
Day 2

Turn the pre-wet mix; add urea; re-wet dry patches

45-55°C
Day 3

Fill bunker 1; forced air from the spigot floor starts

55-65°C
Day 5

Turn into bunker 2; add gypsum; check the squeeze test

Core 70-78°C
Day 7

Turn again; moisture 68-72%; break clumps

Core 70-78°C
Day 9

Phase-I done — dark brown, pliable straw; fill the Phase-II tunnel

Core 70-78°C

Phase-II Pasteurization (Day 9–16)

1

Loading

Fill pasteurization tunnel/room with Phase-I compost on shelves or trays. Ensure uniform depth of 1.8-2.0 m.

2

Levelling Off

Raise temperature to 58-60°C using steam injection. Hold for 6-8 hours. Kills pathogens, nematodes, and weed seeds.

3

Conditioning

Reduce to 45-50°C and hold for 4-6 days with fresh air. Beneficial thermophilic microorganisms convert ammonia to protein.

4

Cool-Down

Gradually cool to 25°C over 12-24 hours with fresh air. Compost is ready for spawning when free ammonia is under 10 ppm and moisture is 66-70%.
