    How do you start mushroom farming in India?

    Pick the crop, freeze capacity in kg/day, arrange land with three-phase power and clean water, decide buy-vs-build for compost, construct PUF-panel climate-controlled rooms with 7-tier racks, prepare a bankable DPR for NHB/MIDH/NABARD support, train the team, and secure buyers before first harvest.     The 8-Step Setup Sequence

    1. Pick the crop and the model
    Button mushroom (climate-controlled, year-round, highest realisation) or oyster/milky (lower entry cost, seasonal in most states). Decide grower-only, compost-only, or integrated farm.
    2. Fix capacity before spending
    Capacity drives everything — a 100 kg/day button farm needs roughly 6 growing rooms of 18×60 ft on 7-tier racks plus compost supply. Freeze kg/day first, then size rooms.
    3. Land, power and water
    Approx. 0.5–1 acre for a 100 kg/day integrated project (including compost yard and 15% clearance). Three-phase power sanction plus DG backup, and clean bore/tank water for humidification.
    4. Compost — buy or build
    Phase-1 + Phase-2 compost unit is the biggest single cost block. Buying ready compost lowers CAPEX but caps margin and ties you to supplier quality.
    5. Grow rooms and climate
    PUF panel rooms (PPGL coated) with refrigeration, AHU, humidification, fresh-air and CO₂ control. This is what makes production predictable in an Indian summer.
    6. DPR, subsidy and finance
    A bankable DPR unlocks NHB, MIDH, NABARD and PMEGP support. Prepare it before ordering equipment, not after.
    7. Team and training
    One trained farm manager plus 4–8 workers for a 100 kg/day farm. Training on compost, casing, picking and hygiene decides your yield far more than brand of machinery.
    8. Market before first harvest
    Lock mandi, retail or D2C channels and cold chain during construction. Mushrooms are perishable — buyers must exist on day one of cropping.
