MS Mushroom Growing Rack Design & Height Standards
MS growing rack design for mushroom farms: tier spacing, aisle width, rack height, MS angle and jali quantities, and how layout limits room capacity.
How are mushroom growing racks designed and how tall should they be?
Commercial mushroom racks are MS angle frames with 7 tiers, roughly 400–450 mm of clear vertical space per tier, a bed width of about 1.2 m and aisles of 750–900 mm for picking. Total rack height is capped by the internal room height and by the highest level a picker can harvest without a platform.

Recommended plan summary
Climate unit per room: Daikin 8 TR (~28 kW Outdoor Unit)
2× Outdoor Unit (4 HP ea., R32 3ph HMT) + 1× Indoor Unit (HMT Dual-Circuit Evap, 550mm fan)
Compost planning: ~80–96 tonnes of Phase-III compost per filling, staggered across rooms so tunnel turns stay continuous.
Indicative engineering estimate only — not a price quotation. Final sizing depends on site conditions, climate zone, ceiling height and grower practice. GST and transportation are extra; any additional client requirement is charged extra.
How MushroomWale calculates it
- 1
Fix tier count from internal height
Work downward from the internal clear height after the ceiling panel and ducting. Each tier needs clear space for the bed plus headroom for casing, watering and pinning airflow. Seven tiers is the MushroomWale standard for our production rooms.
- 2
Set bed width for two-side access
Beds around 1.2 m wide can be worked from both sides. Wider beds leave an unreachable centre strip where mushrooms over-mature and become a disease reservoir.
- 3
Leave real aisles
750–900 mm aisles. Narrow aisles look efficient on paper and destroy picking speed, damage caps and block the fresh-air throw pattern from the duct.
- 4
Specify steel by weight, not by 'rack count'
Racks are procured by MS angle and MS jali weight. Comparing a rack quotation without the kilogram figures is meaningless — that is where thin sections get substituted.
- 5
Protect the steel
Racks live at 85–90% RH. Specify surface prep plus an anti-corrosive primer and finish coat, and re-coat on a scheduled interval; black PET wire is used for bed retention.

- MS rack scope is quoted as a range in the BOQ because steel rates move; rates are ex-GST and transportation is extra.
- Racks are an optional line in MushroomWale quotations — some clients fabricate locally against our drawing.
