How is Paddy Straw Mushroom Cultivated?
Paddy straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) is grown on soaked paddy straw bundles stacked into 4-layer beds, spawned at 2-3% of dry straw weight with a gram-powder supplement, covered with polythene and held at 30-35°C with 80-85% humidity. Spawn run takes 6-8 days; the first harvest comes 10-14 days after bed-making. It needs no air conditioning, costs ₹25,000-60,000 for a 20-30 bed unit, and yields roughly 10-15% biological efficiency. Fruits must be picked at the egg stage and sold the same day — shelf life is under 24 hours and refrigeration below 15°C ruins them.
Paddy Straw Mushroom Cultivation Guide
Volvariella volvacea — India's fastest and most heat-tolerant commercial mushroom, harvested 10-14 days after bed-making.
Why Grow Paddy Straw Mushroom?
Fruits at 30-35°C — the only commercial mushroom that thrives in Indian summer heat
Fastest crop cycle of any commercial mushroom: first harvest 10-14 days after bed-making
Substrate is paddy straw, the cheapest and most abundant agri-waste in East and South India
No climate-controlled room required — a thatched or polythene-covered shed is enough
Very low entry cost: ₹25,000-60,000 for a 20-30 bed unit
Strong regional demand in West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu

Step-by-Step Bed Cultivation Method
Straw Selection & Bundling
Use fresh, bright, fungus-free paddy straw. Make uniform bundles roughly 60-80 cm long and 8-10 cm thick, tied at both ends. Avoid straw that has been rain-soaked or stored damp — it carries competitor moulds.
Soaking
Soak the bundles fully in clean water for 12-18 hours, then lift and drain for 2-3 hours until no water drips. Target moisture is 70-75% — the straw should feel wet but not release water when squeezed hard.
Bed Making & Spawning
Lay 4-5 bundles side by side on a raised bamboo/brick platform to form one layer. Spread spawn plus soaked, dehusked bengal gram or red gram powder 4-5 cm inside the edges of each layer. Build 4 layers, with the top layer covered fully by spawn. Spawn rate is 2-3% of dry straw weight.
Spawn Run (Incubation)
Cover the bed with clear polythene sheet and hold at 30-35°C with high humidity. Keep the room dark and undisturbed. White mycelium should colonise the bed within a week. Do not water during this stage.
Fruiting
Remove the polythene cover, provide diffused light and fresh air, and mist gently 2-3 times a day to hold 80-85% RH. Pinhead buttons appear within 3-4 days of uncovering.
Harvesting
Harvest at the egg/button stage before the volva ruptures — quality and price drop sharply once the cap opens. Twist and lift the whole fruit body. Expect 2-3 flushes; the first flush gives the bulk of the yield.
Paddy Straw vs Button vs Oyster Mushroom
| Parameter | Paddy Straw | Button | Oyster |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optimal temperature | 30-35°C | 16-18°C cropping | 20-30°C |
| Climate control | Not required | Mandatory (5-12 TR per room) | Optional |
| Days to first harvest | 10-14 | 35-45 after casing | 20-25 |
| Substrate | Paddy straw bundles | Composted wheat straw | Straw / sawdust in bags |
| Shelf life | Under 24 hours | 5-7 days chilled | 2-5 days |
| Best suited to | Hot, humid East & South India | Year-round, pan-India with HVAC | Most of India |
Indicative Startup Costs
Approx. indicative ranges for planning only. Straw, spawn and labour rates vary by state and season. GST @ 18% and transport are extra where applicable.
Limitations You Must Plan For
Shelf life under 24 hours at ambient temperature — sell same-day locally or move to a cold chain immediately. Do not store below 15°C, which causes autolysis and blackening.
Yields are inherently lower than button or oyster mushroom. Biological efficiency of 10-15% is normal; treat claims of 30%+ with caution.
Competitor moulds (Coprinus, Trichoderma) take over if straw is old, over-soaked or the shed is unhygienic. Fresh straw and clean platforms matter more than any other single factor.
Harvest timing is unforgiving — a bed left one extra day past the egg stage loses most of its market value.
In North India the season is effectively limited to May-September unless a heated structure is used.
