Is button mushroom farming more difficult than oyster?

Yes. Button mushroom requires climate-controlled rooms (16–24°C swings, 85–95% RH), Phase-1/2 compost discipline, casing soil, and tight cycle management. Oyster mushroom can be grown in a simple polyhouse with shade nets in most Indian climates, on sterilised straw. First-time mushroom farmers should start with oyster for 6–12 months before scaling to button.

Can I start mushroom farming with ₹5 lakh?

Yes — for oyster mushroom in a small polyhouse (~600–800 sq ft) you can start with ₹5–8 L including substrate sterilisation, racks, fans, and 1 cycle working capital. The smallest button farm our cost model supports is two 18×40 ft rooms (100 kg/day, ₹15.6–21.9 lakh ex-GST). Its capital subsidy is MIDH, up to ₹12 lakh per production unit; PMEGP does not fund a cultivation shed.

Which mushroom has higher demand in India?

Button mushroom dominates urban demand — driven by retail, QSR, hotels, processed food. Oyster has steady growth in vegetarian restaurants, local markets, and value-added products (pickles, dried). For pan-India distribution and contract farming, button wins; for hyperlocal supply, oyster is excellent.

Can I grow both button and oyster on the same farm?

Operationally not recommended — they need different climate envelopes (button 16–18°C cropping, oyster 22–28°C), different substrates, different SOPs. If you want diversification, build two separate units or pick one to specialise. Most successful farms in India focus on one crop for the first 2–3 years.
