What Is a Phase-2 Pasteurization Tunnel?
A Phase-2 pasteurization tunnel is a sealed, insulated chamber with a plenum floor and recirculation blower. Compost is pasteurised at 58–60 °C for 6–8 hours (never above 62 °C), killing pathogens and competitor moulds, then conditioned at 45–50 °C for 4–6 days until ammonia is gone and cooled to 25 °C for spawning.
Why Pasteurization Is Non-Negotiable
Unpasteurized compost invites crop failure from Trichoderma green mold, nematodes, and competitor fungi. A proper Phase-2 tunnel ensures selective compost with 10× lower contamination risk compared to room pasteurization.
