Is spent mushroom substrate good for plants?

Yes — properly composted SMS is one of the best organic soil conditioners available. Can spent mushroom substrate be used as biogas feedstock?

Yes, and increasingly profitable. SMS has 35–45% volatile solids and high cellulose, making it a solid feedstock for anaerobic digesters and CBG (Compressed Biogas) plants under the SATAT initiative. CBG plants pay either a tipping fee or ₹0.5–1.5/kg for SMS feedstock, and the digestate is itself a saleable bio-fertiliser. Approved disposal routes are: (1) on-farm composting + agricultural land use, (2) sale to organic input dealers / FPOs, (3) feedstock to authorised biogas / CBG plants, (4) controlled biomass briquetting.
