The short answer

What Is Button Mushroom Farming and What Does It Return?

Button mushroom farming grows Agaricus bisporus on pasteurised wheat-straw compost inside an insulated PUF room held at 22–24 °C for spawn run and 16–18 °C for cropping. First harvest comes about 30–37 days after spawning, and a crop occupies the room for 60 days over three flushes, giving 200 kg of mushroom per tonne of compost. One 18×40 ft room takes 1,600 bags (16 tonnes of compost) and yields 3,200 kg a crop, 6 crops a year, at ₹94.4/kg on bought-in compost (₹73.6/kg with your own) against the model's ₹120/kg farm-gate price. The room costs ₹11.7 lakh ex-GST in the full scope; GST @ 18% and transport are extra.

The Button Mushroom Cycle, Stage by Stage

Phase-I composting

Wheat straw, chicken manure, gypsum and urea fermented in aerated bunkers, turned on Day 3, 5 and 7; core 70–78 °C. The whole compost cycle is 15–16 days from pre-wetting to spawning.

6 days (Day 3–9)

Phase-II pasteurisation

Tunnel pasteurisation at 58–60 °C (hold 6–8 hours), then conditioning at 45–50 °C until free ammonia is under 10 ppm.

4–6 days

Spawning & spawn run

Grain spawn at 0.5–0.75% of wet compost; air 22–24 °C, compost 24–25 °C, RH 90–95%, CO₂ allowed to build to 5,000–15,000 ppm.

12–16 days

Casing & case run

4–5 cm of pasteurised casing (coco peat with FYM or spent compost plus lime, pH 7.5–7.8); case run at 24–25 °C, RH 92–95%, CO₂ 5,000–10,000 ppm.

7–10 days

Airing & pinning

Air brought down to 17–18 °C (ramp over 24–48 hours), CO₂ pulled under 1,000 ppm with fresh air, RH 88–92%.

5–7 days

Cropping (3 flushes)

16–18 °C, RH 85–90%, CO₂ under 1,000 ppm. First harvest 18–21 days after casing, then a flush every 7–10 days, split about 50% / 30% / 20%. Pick closed caps before the veil breaks.

3 flushes

Cook-out & reset

Cook-out at 65–70 °C for 8–12 hours before emptying, then wash and reset. The room turns over every 60 days — 6 crops a year.

8–12 hours

Equipment & Where to Buy It

Five Mistakes That Cost a Flush

Buying compost without ammonia testing

Spawn only into compost with free ammonia under 10 ppm; residual ammonia kills spawn. Always check before spawning.

Undersized fresh-air system

Pins set only when CO₂ is pulled under 1,000 ppm. Blower capacity and duct sizing must be calculated, not copied.

Thin insulation

Thinner than 80 mm PUF on external walls, 60 mm on common walls and 80/110 mm on the roof, the refrigeration unit runs continuously in summer and power cost destroys margin.

No cook-out between batches

Skipping the 65–70 °C cook-out carries mites, cobweb and green mould into the next crop.

Selling only to the mandi

Mandi is the price floor. Hotels, retail chains and D2C punnets pay above it — check today's rates before you plan the sales mix.
